Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV Online – FFXIV – Still Looking Great after 10 Years

Daniel Hall Free to Play, MMORPG 6 April 2020

Final Fantasy XIV or FFXVI for short is another great MMORPG that was released in 2010 and still looks pretty good even by today standards.  It boasts a huge amount of content and a massive player base and add in the fantastic combat system that has been perfected over a few Final Fantasy releases and you have the combination for a terrific game.

During combat we see some nice multi-button combo’s that can be used during combat, something we don’t see at all in EQ and only to a small amount during WoW.  It does take a bit of practice and you can actually stack combat moves to increase speed, damage and power.  Some classes have more combo’s than others so i would suggest trying a few until you find a class you wish to level to the end game. There is an option to switch classes but only the once.

Free to play for 30 days via Steam Download of Final Fantasy XIV Online – FFXIV After that its a monthly subscription to continue online game play. If you sign up via the Final Fantasy XIV Online official page you get a Free trial upto lvl 30-35.

Subscription in the EU is a little different as we require the PAL version. This needs a  European & other Regions Square Enix Account to play.

There is a great deal of “How to Guides” available on the internet and so this is more like a reference guide to the console commands you will need to know while progressing through Final Fantasy XIV.

Final Fantasy XI

Final Fantasy XI – FFXI – Still Amazing 20 Years on

Daniel Hall Free to Play, MMORPG 6 April 2020

Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) is another MMORPG from the early 2000’s (May 2002), along with EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot it has a huge amount of content and Lore.  With 20 years of back ground and player base it has just improved with age but unlike EQ and DAoC  that have little in the way of graphics engine updates, FFXI has had a significant graphics update. For its age it looks absolutely amazing!

There is no new content coming out as of now and it seems updates are now being limited. The player bases also seems to be on the decline in favour of the faster paced new titles. How ever it is a game that is easy to solo so you can progress a long way on your own. For me the Guild team comradery is part of the appeal of a MMORPG and so for me this is where FFXI gets let down. In FFXI is has a characters that you can bring along to help you explore called “Trusts” a bit like Mercenarys in EQ. Once you hit lvl 99 this changes slightly as you will encounter more players at the top end that are willing to team up.

The GUI is the same style as you would expect from EQ and WoW etc with the ability to group different text into different windows to make them easier to read. It has familiar command shell that lets you make some quick fire macro style commands to help with the repeatable tasks you end up doing a lot.

EverQuest 2

EverQuest 2 – Amazing Adventures

Daniel Hall Free to Play, MMORPG 6 April 2020

EverQuest 2 seemed to be the long awaited update to the graphics engine that EverQuest 1 so desperately needed! New graphics engine, amazing models, super textures but still with that EverQuest play-style.  Having played EQ1 since release, we knew the format, setup, layout, Lore and so jumped into EQ2 soon as it was released in Nov 2004.  We was going to give EQ2 4 weeks of solid play before making a decision to jump to World of WarCraft or not. If you have read my World of WarCraft section you know i jumped to WoW

It wasn’t that the graphics were bad or it didn’t meet expectations, or the quests were lame, it just wasnt EQ1, simple as that. I managed to get to level 50 and had joined a guild and started to progress nicely into the game but it just didn’t fill that void of EQ1,  my first MMORPG!  I am sure there will be players out there that first played EQ2 and then tried other MMORPG and have felt the same way and now say “its just not EQ2″, that was the best” and i realise now that a lot of the thrill was it being the thrill of the unknown, something new and the people you met along the adventure.

EverQuest 2 does live up to the original in that it has all the great features of EQ1 but with a newly updated story line to the Lore and better graphics.

This is not a guide to EQ2 but more like a technical list of all the options, commands, scripts, macro etc that you can play with within the game.

EverQuest

EverQuest – The Best Game EVER!

Daniel Hall Free to Play, MMORPG 6 April 2020

EverQuest (EQ) was and still is my all time favourite game and the first MMORPG of its kind.  I was an extremely active player on Tallon Zek between Sept 1999 and Dec 2004 (2004 was when World of WarCraft was Released), yes i defected to the competition, but that’s another story. Its set in a magical medieval background where Dark Elves, Trolls and Ogre’s don’t really get on to well with the High Elves, Wood Elves, Humans, Dwarves and Gnomes and life is hard, you tend to die a lot. The main objective in EQ is to be the best you can at what ever you want to do, be that a Tank, Healer or DPS class with a hole lot of adventure adding in along the way with the main goal to have fun. I spent a lot of time just chatting to people, learning in-game languages, trade skilling, questing and my favourite PVPing.

EverQuest (or EverCrack as some call it and for a very good reason) will take your Soul if you let it. I managed to accumulate over 1 year 6 months of play time on my main character over the 5 years i plated EQ! EverQuest still haunts me today and has called me to returned to Norrath a few times and I even set up my own Project 1999 server.   Once my server was live i invited some of my old guild members to try it out (sorry guys, what have i let you in for??)  The idea was to see and finish some content we did not get the chance to see due to being on a PVP server but she is a seductive siren and drew them back to the Pay to Play world of EveryQuest and they rejoined a live server hosted by Daybreak, the now owners of EverQuest, EverQuest 2 and a bunch of other old sckool games. Seems Daybreak are collecting them…

The information i collected here over the years is not so much a guide on how to play EQ or even how to level up fast but more as a reference guide to help you on you journey through Norrath. There is a lot to playing a game like EQ and it can be quite over whelming at times, especially when you realise there are over 500 zone to visit and you think the 10 your levelling in so far are big.

I hope you find something useful in the following information all-though some of it maybe a bit out of date

Eve Online

Eve Online puts the MASSIVE in MMORPG

Daniel Hall Free to Play, MMORPG 6 April 2020

The Sci-Fi MMORPG,  EVE Online is a great space sim and has a slightly different server setup than other MMORPG in the sense that it has only one realm/universe (there can only be one SPACE) and its big). Other MMORPG will have multiple realms with all slightly different rules to the game, some PvE some PVP but Eve just have ONE huge PVP arena. It has safe zone for the new players but essentially as you gain experience and move out into the universe you an open target to anyone not in your faction.

The MMORPG EVE Online is so huge, i don’t think a map would do it justice, did i mention it was huge?  Eve Online always reminds me of this quote by Douglas Adams

“Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.”

EVE Online in 2020 is now FREE to download and Play but has a range of in-game purchases but unlike a lot of Pay to Win games EVE Online seems to have selected a nice balance so not to let players become to over powering. You can buy  in-game credits or in the world of EVE its ISK and PLEX, you can buy additional training time to boost up character skills and also starter packs to speed up your newb progress.

You can play just as an Eve Alpha basically Free to play but with limited access to game content or upgrade to EVE Omega and enjoy access to the full ship and skills access.

EVE Online can be Downloaded from Steam

BTW EVE online is Huge, i think i did say that, the map is huge.  Since EVE release in 2003 i have returned several times for another go, usually when they release a major update and i always think “i am gunna be the best PVPer ever, gunna kit out some sweet ships and kick sum ass”  only to find am still a newb myself and there are hundreds if not thousands of players better then you and have been playing non-stop since the start.

The creators of EVE are always adding more features, like more battle ships, gun ships, mining ships, technology, more guns and has a market places to buy and sell these. EVE has its own economy and market place like no other. You can buy and sell anything to anyone anywhere, essentially trade just like real FOREX markets and earn ISK and PLEX that way, rather than fight mobs.
